Project

Resolution Ontology Development for Product Obsolescence Management

Project status: Complete

Thrust area: Enabling Information Infrastructure

Research team: Janis Terpenny

While component obsolescence is a significant problem facing many industries, there is lack of knowledge needed for current tools to manage this problem. This project develops an ontology to capture and represent the knowledge used in obsolescence management. Project progress indicated an essential gap in product design. Significant life-time cost savings can be achieved by considering life- cycle mismatch during product design. This is addressed by extending the project and considering obsolescence a product complexity source.
