Identifying the Effects of Organizational Structures on the Performance of Cross-Functional Teams

Project status: Complete

Thrust area: New Design Paradigms and Processes

Research team: Marie Paretti

Structural issues surrounding the relationships of cross-functional team members to their “home” units has emerged as a critical factor, charged with potential conflict among research and industry sites. Our research suggests that without careful attention to organizational relationships, significant conflict can develop between the functional departmental managers and the cross functional team leaders. The study investigated the types of conflict that can develop and suggest steps that organizations can take to improve team performance and avoid/resolve functional department-project team conflict.
