The benefits of this project include establishing the knowledge to evaluate tradeoffs between variety and commonality during product design and development, which may impact costs, performance and manufacturability of non-assembled products, understanding the different types of complexity resulting from decisions made during product design and development, establishing a complexity measurement index reflecting the impact of decisions made during product design and development on downstream complexity, and developing decision support tool(s) to help manage complexity and improve efficiencies in production planning and development of new products.
