KTI Inventory: Developing a Methodology for Knowledge Discovery in Engineering Design

Project status: Complete

Thrust area: Enabling Information Infrastructure

Research team: Andrew Olewnik, Ken English

Firms are continually trying to improve the efficacy of their design process through adoption of IT- based tools. However, design remains a socio-technical process, thus the “as-executed” process often deviates from the “as-prescribed” version. Understanding these deviations as emergent behavior is critical to implementing processes that optimizes knowledge infrastructure. Firms should spend money on this project because there is a potential to develop a tool that assists in identifying inefficiencies in digitally executed, knowledge-driven design processes.
